Whoop dee doo, I’ve been driving a car that get’s 32mph for the last 20 years….They should be getting twice that or more by now.
Sorry about that, I did mean 32mpg cars NOT 32mph

When ever there is a question containing “why do they” it usually involves an answer which amounts to more money than the consumer is willing to spend.
The cost of the technology you desire would greatly increase the cost of the vehicle. Either way, the consumer is going to pay. You only shift where your money goes to the auto manufacturer instead of the oil company.
I think you mean 32MPG not MPH lol. If you want double that go get a hybrid, thats why they were designed for. So technically we do have cars now that get double the gas mileage your getting. If your wondering why the gasoline powered cars don’t get that much MPG, its cause it would be nearly impossible in this market. People want a car that has a decent amount of power. To make a regular car get 60mpg you’d have to have a small engine and cut down drastically on weight. Neither of these is gonna happen because nobody in this day and age is gonna buy a car that has like 50hp and nobody is going to buy a car that is too small because that makes safety a thing of the past. So if you want 60mpg, get a hybrid and you’ll be set, don’t hope on gasoline cars getting double your 20 year old cars gas mileage since safety and power is a key seller in todays market.
32mpg? I drive a 4×4, easily get 40mpg, Fiat Panda gets around 60mpg, loads of cars now easily break 50mpg and are fun to drive. I live in UK, where fuel costs the equivalent of $11.65 a gallon.
